CS4NH Summit

K‐12 educators and allies, plan to join us for the second annual CS4NH summit that will bring together NH and national experts, K‐12 and higher education teams, business industry representatives, and policy drivers to share our common vision for K‐12 CS in NH. CS4NH is about expanding K12 access to Computer Science education. This event taking place Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at White Mountains Community College, Berlin, will include workshops for a variety of user levels and will be a great opportunity to learn more about integrating CS. New Hampshire Special Education Information System (NHSEIS) Training

The Bureau of Special Education is providing NHSEIS training and NHSEIS webinars for Teachers and Special Education Teachers, Office Professionals, and other NHSEIS users. The Teacher and Special Education Teacher sessions will include both NHSEIS entry and the Special Education Process. The Special Education Aid and Chapter 402 sessions will provide guidance to districts to help ensure the process goes smoothly.

Shifting Mindsets: Leading with Strengths and Raising Expectations

The New Hampshire Transition Community of Practice announces its 11th Annual Transition Summit taking place November 14, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord. This three-day workshop is being offered October 6th and 7th and March 10th. Everyone is an Asset Builder

Register today for participation in this four-hour training designed to inform participants about the Developmental Assets framework developed by the Search Institute. The framework identifies a set of skills, experiences, relationships, and behaviors that enable young people to develop into successful and contributing adults. This training will identify the easy steps that anyone who interacts with children and youth can take to be effective asset builders. Youth Mental Health Training

This Youth Mental Health Training is open to the public! The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, & substance use disorder. Participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis. Training will be on November 14th from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the NHDOE. OPEN NH Fall 2017 Session Online Professional Development Courses

Registrations are now being accepted for the OPEN NH Fall 2017 Session courses. The seven-week, 35-hour online professional development courses begin on October 4th and continue through November 21st. The registration fee for OPEN NH professional development courses is $130. The list of OPEN NH professional development courses offered during the upcoming OPEN NH Sessions can be found on the website at: www.opennh.org, select Courses, select Current Course Schedule. OPEN NH offers a variety of group discount deals for SAUs, districts, or schools. Graduate credits are available through either New England College or Plymouth State University; additional registrations, per credit costs and registration fees apply to graduate credit options. Online registration is only available for individuals. District Cohorts at reduced fees are also offered. Cohorts must use a single group registration form via email to the OPEN NH Project Coordinator. Details for both procedures are available on the website at www.opennh.org. OPEN NH is part of the NH e-Learning for Educators Project, a program of the New Hampshire Department of Education, coordinated through the Office of Educational Technology. Announcing a New NH e-Learning for Educators OPEN NH Partnership with New England College

The NH e-Learning for Educators Initiative, offering online professional development courses and tutorials through OPEN NH, has an established a partnership with New England College to offer graduate credits for OPEN NH courses. Each OPEN NH online professional development course will be reviewed and approved by New England College and will qualify for 3 graduate credits. OPEN NH course participants will be able to earn the optional graduate credits from New England College by successfully completing their OPEN NH course, writing an additional Reflection Paper on significant learning achieved through the course. An additional per credit cost of $150 and a $100 registration fee applies, that’s a total of $550 for 3 graduate credits! What a deal! A separate registration with New England College prior to the end of the fourth week of the course is required. In an effort to assist schools in providing training for ALL school related employees, volunteers, substitute teachers and others, NH e-Learning for Educators Project, coordinated through the Office of Educational Technology, offers short online tutorial training on the following subjects:

  • Bullying Awareness and Prevention, a 3-hour tutorial, $10.00.
  • The NH 3 Tiered Bullying Prevention and Intervention Model, a 5-hour tutorial, $25.00.
  • Substitute Teaching: Tools and Tips for Success, a 5-hour tutorial, $25.00
  • Ten Technology Skills for Learning and Teaching, a 15-hour tutorial, $75.00

Announcing a New NH e-Learning for Educators OPEN NH Online Tutorial for ESOL Teachers

ST-07 Developing An Effective Lau Plan for English Language Learners – The OPEN NH program, in collaboration with the Title III Office at the NH Department of Education, developed a tutorial that offers information and guidance to teachers and administrators who are developing their Lau Plans for English Language Learners. Registrations are open and ongoing for all OPEN NH Self-Paced Tutorials. The cost for this OPEN NH tutorial is $25.

Food Service Workers Tutorials

In an effort to assist schools in providing training for food service personnel and managers, NH e-Learning for Educators, coordinated through the Office of Educational Technology, in partnership with the Bureau of Nutrition Programs and Services (BNPS), has developed a series of short online tutorials training on a variety of food service related topics. These self-paced online tutorials are offered through OPEN NH. Each tutorial will earn professional development hours upon successful completion that can be used for re-certification and licensing continuing education units. There is no cost to register for these tutorials for all food service personnel currently working in New Hampshire public schools. Veterans Education Services in New Hampshire
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers GI Bill educational benefits to help service members, eligible veterans, and their families obtain a postsecondary education. New Hampshire veterans have access to many college degree, diploma, certificate, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training programs at many New Hampshire branch and campus locations. GI Bill benefits can also be used for national and state exams, and state bar exams.

The New Hampshire Department of Education, Division of Higher Education ‒ Higher Education Commission, regulates and approves programs for eligible veterans and beneficiaries who wish to use their GI Bill benefits. NH’s Manufacturing Week has expanded to Manufacturing Month

This year’s NH Manufacturing Month will take place in October. High school and middle school students may tour manufacturing sites, visit postsecondary manufacturing programs, and learn about career & technical education opportunities. NH CTE’s and community colleges will schedule open houses for students and members of the community to learn about their advanced manufacturing programs. The Governor’s Advanced Manufacturing Summit is a highlight of the week’s events. One of the primary goals of NH Manufacturing Month is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about advanced manufacturing and the high-demand career opportunities this sector of the economy provides. The Department of Education, and its partners, NH Manufacturing Extension Partnership, NH Division of Economic Development, and NH Community College System, have organized NH Manufacturing Week for the last four years. Annual TechWomen Ambassadors Week 2017

The NH High Tech Council’s TechWomen|TechGirls committee is in planning stages for the 3rd Annual TechWomen Ambassadors Week 2017 for 8th and 9th grade girls. This year the events will take place the week of November 13 – 17, 2017. The theme is STEMspiration to Explore STEM Careers. This one day, two hour event will take place at several high schools across the state. TechWomen Ambassadors representing various high tech industry sectors including aerospace, robotics, biotech, computing, engineering, green tech offer their expertise and hands-on demonstrations. Wonders of Wildlife (WOW)

Wonders of Wildlife is a series of active educational programs presented in the classroom. Fish and Game WOW docents travel to elementary schools to teach one of four interactive programs: Habits and Habitats, Endangered Species, Pond Ecology, and Wetlands. Educators who want to introduce their students in grades 3-6 to New Hampshire’s wildlife and wetland resources – or reinforce related lessons – have until September 28 to request fall 2017 visits. There is no charge for the programs. Teachers may download a print-and-mail program request form on the Fish and Game website at www.wildnh.com/education/wonders-of-wildlife.html.

2017 NH Soil Judging Contest

The Soil Judging Contest provides high school students with an awareness of the common characteristics of soil, how these characteristics affect selected uses of the soil, and how some land uses may be ‘judged’ to be better than others based on soil features. This free, educational event for NH high school students is taking place Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 8 :00 a.m. to noon at the UNH Kingman Farm, in Madbury. Poetry Out Loud Program

Applications are being accepted for the 13th annual Poetry Out Loud program from all NH high schools. Poetry Out Loud is a free and fun curricular unit that deeply engages students in our nation’s literary heritage through classic poetry. The flexible program is a national model in poetry instruction and can be integrated into the English Language Arts Curriculum. Free training and resources for educators are available including a teachers’ manual, professional development clinics for educators, poetry recitation and public speaking workshops for students, and more. Personalizing Education Through Understanding-Based Curriculum and Authentic Assessment

This workshop will examine a “blueprint” to guide construction of an understanding-based curriculum helping participants on that journey. The key competencies at the center of a modern education will be identified and a set of practical and proven design tools for developing authentic performance tasks and associated rubrics will be presented. Thoughtful, planned design is critical in creating a rigorous learning environment. Exploring a personalization matrix for addressing the needs and interests of students, part of this design process, will be examined. In addition, a personalized and competency-based approach to grading and reporting (3Ps model) will be discussed. An excellent list of web-based resources to support these ideas will be available. Math with Technology in Early Education

This online 6-Week Course at UNH starts on October 16, 2017. Topics include: designing active, engaging math curriculum; using technology to support project-based learning; building early social emotional skills to aid active math in the classroom; assessing student competency; and supporting struggling learners in early math. Scholarships are available for qualified educators in NH which will significantly discount the final cost of the course.
