Back-to-school is a moment filled with possibilities. Learning spaces are being prepared, students are arriving with hope, families are looking ahead with anticipation, and educators are ready to welcome them all into a new school year.
But that hope meets a stark reality in 2026. From property taxes to food to school supplies, families across New Hampshire are being pushed to the breaking point by rising costs. Too many students are coming to school carrying instability that no child should have to shoulder. And educators like you, who give everything to their students, are being asked to give even more, often paying out of their own pockets just to meet basic classroom needs.
As educators, we know what our students, families, and we need. We need schools with the resources to meet students where they are. We need education professionals who are respected, supported, and equipped to do their jobs. And we need communities—and state decision makers—willing to invest in public education as the foundation of opportunity and a stronger future for everyone.
As we prepare for a new school year and the possibilities it brings, state leaders are using the courts to try to undo the state’s constitutional obligations to fund an adequate education for all children and voters are preparing to cast their ballots on local school tax cap measures that could jeopardize the future of neighborhood public schools for generations to come.
With so much at stake for our schools and communities, this back-to-school moment is more than a transition. It is a turning point.
The decisions being made right now about resources, support, and investment will determine what our public schools become and who they truly serve. That is why the work of our union matters so deeply.
