Letter from the President: Time to Rest and Recharge

Summer is a time for educators to reflect on their successes and rest and recharge for the next school year.
Published: June 27, 2025

The last class has come and gone. The classrooms, gyms, libraries and cafeterias have been packed up for summer. And while we know that physically the buildings may be shut down for summer, school is not out. There are still summer school classes going on. There are still workshops and conferences and extended learning that is happening for our students and ourselves. There are negotiation meetings and planning that is happening for the next contract and the next school year.

Education is more than just a profession; it is a lifestyle and a calling. Educators do not stop being educators because the school doors shut in June. Newly enacted laws do not stop because the school doors shut in June. Now is the time to look back at what has happened this past year in the Legislature and really look at how it will affect public education in the future. The so-called “parental bill of rights”, universal vouchers, potential book bans and still no movement on fair funding for public education in New Hampshire is what this past year has brought us in the State House.

On a chilly November day last fall, our friends and neighbors joined us in electing a new legislature and governor. Like a seed planted in the spring, we are now seeing the results of that act. Some impacts will immediately affect our students. Unfortunately, not in positive ways. It is important for us not only to educate students. We must also educate their parents and the public about the work we do, and especially, about how the consequences of their vote affect their children and communities.

Please take the next couple of months to re-charge your batteries as best you can. While you enjoy vacation trips and family outings, or while you are working your summer job, please take a minute to think about the good work you did this year.

In the meantime, NEA-NH will continue its work for you and your local union. We are planning learning opportunities for local leaders, developing campaigns to get your contracts passed, exploring methods to increase membership, and laying the groundwork to elect candidates who will pass laws to support you.

All of us at NEA-NH and your Leadership are wishing you the best summer!
