This morning, the New Hampshire House voted to accept the Senate amendment to HB 347, NEA-New Hampshire’s Paycheck Stability bill. The bill is now headed to the Governor’s desk for her signature.
NEA-NH has been instrumental in both the creation and passage of this bill. We worked with sponsors in drafting the legislation at the request of our members, and met with Department of Labor officials to help explain the benefits and secure their support. We were the only union to testify for the bill’s passage in both House and Senate hearings. Members wrote hundreds of emails and letters, and made phone calls to Legislators asking them to support this bill. As a result, the bill sailed unanimously through both chambers, and will become law this summer.
“Our hard-working, dedicated Education Support Professional members deserve this victory,” said Scott McGilvray, NEA-NH President. “Vacations, holidays and snow days can cause our ESP members and other hourly employees’ paychecks to fluctuate wildly. This bill will restore predictability and financial security to members by allowing them the option of receiving their paycheck in equal installments across the school or calendar year.”
Bills for food, medicine, insurance and healthcare do not take snow days. Just this past February a number of our members were only paid for five days in the entire month. With HB 347 these members will receive a predictable paycheck should these events happen again.
Thank you to everyone that took the time to contact their Senator or Representative asking them to support this bill. Thanks to your support this important law will go into effect in time for next school year.
