In May 1997, a small reading task force at the National Education Association came up with a big idea: “Let’s create a day to celebrate reading. We’ll call it ‘NEA’s Read Across America’ and we’ll celebrate it on Dr. Seuss’s birthday.” And so was born on March 2, 1998, the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen.
Originally created as a one-day event to celebrate the joy of reading, NEA’s Read Across America,in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P., has grown into a nationwide initiative that promotes reading every day.
After 16 years, the simplest recipe for Read Across America is still the best: a caring adult in the company of a book and a child. Whether you have something simple or elaborate in mind for your celebration, we have the tools, resources, and activities to help you make this the greatest Read Across America celebration yet!
