Comments made during Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity ‘Scare Campaign’ Event to Discourage Young Adults, Others from Getting Health Coverage
Concord, NH – NH Congressional candidate and former NH Speaker Bill O’Brien compared the Affordable Care Act expanding health coverage to the Fugitive Slave Act condoning human slavery during a Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity event in Concord, New Hampshire on August 1, 2013.
O’Brien made his remarks while at the foot of a memorial statue honoring the first anti-slavery US Senator, the famous abolitionist John Parker Hale. In fact, Hale was one of only four US Senators in 1850 to vote against the Fugitive Slave Act.

Transcript: “And what is Obamacare? It is a law as destructive to personal and individual liberty as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 that allowed slave owners to come to New Hampshire and seize African Americans and use the federal courts to take them back to federal… to slave states.” – NH-02 Congressional candidate and former NH Speaker of the House Bill O’Brien (R)
AFP’s event is part of a national conservative campaign to actively discourage people from gaining quality, affordable health care; the campaign will specifically target young adult men to encourage them to skip health coverage. Statement from Granite State Progress Executive Director Zandra Rice Hawkins:
“Consumer health advocates are looking for ways to get more people covered, but Americans for Prosperity and politicians like Bill O’Brien are trying to make health access as scary and burdensome as possible. Their goal is to discourage people from getting covered because they want to use health reform as a political wedge issue in the next election. They are willing to come between you and your doctor to meet that goal.”
“Congressional candidate Bill O’Brien’s painful and gross comparison is just the latest in a long line of misleading attacks and rhetoric promoted by the same special interests who opposed health reform in the first place,” Rice Hawkins said.
